Composition-A was devised on the basis of prescriptions used in the treatment of immune deficiency syndromes. In Chinese clinical work, these deficiency syndromes are often noted secondary to cancer therapies, but this prescription has been used in the U.S. primarily to help protect and boost the immune functions of persons infected with HIV. It is currently applied to help restore immune functions once HIV activity is inhibited by drug therapy. The key herbs are immune enhancing tonics, such as astragalus, ganoderma, and deer antler. The large number of herbs in the formulation arises from the attempt to nourish all the organs and essences with: yin and blood nourishing herbs (rehmannia, tortoise shell, ligustrum, peony, lycium, ophiopogon, millettia); yang tonic herbs (epimedium, cistanche, antler); and qi tonic herbs (astragalus, ginseng, atractylodes, licorice). Also, because immune deficiency syndrome leaves one open to infection, a prophylactic dose of antitoxin herbs that have immune regulating effects is included (andrographitis, lonicera, hu-chang, phellodendron); these herbs also clear heat from the blood. Salvia vitalizes blood circulation, clears heat, and, with millettia, aid production of blood. The formula can be used also as a general tonic for those who may not have evident immune deficiency, but easily become fatigued.
