Drynaria 12 was devised on the basis of a treatment described int he contemporary Chinese medical literature that was reported to be highly effective in alleviating the pain of osteoarthritis. This joint condition differs from rheumatoid arthritis. From the traditional viewpoint, osteroarthritis tends to arise from kidney yang deficiency and it manifests as sharp pain (sign of blood stasis syndrome) at a fixed site (most often in the lower body). By contrast, rheumatoid arthritis arises from invasion of wind, cold, and damp (see Chiang-huo 13, Cinnamon 14), although it sometimes manifests locally as heat (see: Clerodendron 6). Drynaria 12 focuses on tonifying the kidney yang (drynaria, dipsacus, eucommia, deer antler) and vitalizing blood circulation (millettia, tang-kuei, achyranthes, cnidium). It is structured somewhat like the well-known traditional arthritis remedy Tu-huo and Loranthus Combination (Duhuo Jisheng Tang), which is applied to chronic arthritis affecting the lower body. The principal difference is the addition of the yang invigorating herbs drynaria, dipsacus, and deer antler, which also nourish the tendons (see Acanthopanax 10)and bones and help to protect the joint spaces. Deer antler contains glucosamine sulfate, a compound widely prescribed for patients with osteoarthritis; it nourishes the cartilage and synovial fluid. Additional glucosamine and dipsacus is obtained with Boswellamine (White Tiger). The same herbs used for osteoarthritis may be applicable to other disorders involving sharp pain, such as sciatica or gout, and for other degenerative conditions, such as osteoporosis. For additional blood vitalizing therapy, add Millettia 9 or Achyranthes Tablets. |
