Woman's Treasure was formulated on the basis of work in modern Chinese clinics in treating funtional infertility (e.g., amenorrhea, hormonal imbalance, lowered fertility with aging). The basic method of therapy is to "warm the uterus" by tonifying kidney yang and vitalizing the circulation of blood. Together, these two activities are thought to restore the normal reproductive functions. They will regulate the menstrual cycle, normalize the hormones, improve the sexual drive, and, if all other conditions are correct (e.g., no problem of male infertility or use of birth control), result in pregnancy. Simply discontinue use of the herbs once pregnancy is confirmed. In this formulation, fluorite, cistanche, curculigo, cynamorium, deer antler, epidemium, and cuscuta are the yang tonics used to warm the uterus. Tang-kuei, peony, red peony, and salvia vitalize blood circulation; these same herbs, along with rehmannia and deer antler, nourish the liver. There can be several different causes of infertility, some of which will require additional therapies. For example, when there is blockage of the fallopian tubes, it may be necessary to focus on blood vitalizing therapy (e.g., add Zedoaria Tablets, Myrrh Tablets, Turtle Shell Tablets, or Sparganium 12) and/or add phlegm resolving therapy (e.g., add Arisaema 10). It may be appropriate to start therapy with a decoction or dried decoction at high dosage for one month or more, and then follow-up using the tableted formulas.
